Brilliant essay, uttterly infuriating. It seems to me that Ireland has created a well paid technocracy that is incapable of doing anything other than spin pointlessly in circles. Jonathan Swift had written about something similar in Gulliver's Travels:
A First or Chief Minister of State, whom I intended to describe, was a creature wholly exempt from joy and grief, love and hatred, pity and anger; at least made use of no other passions but a violent desire of wealth, power, and titles; that he applies his words to all uses, except to the indication of his mind; that he never tells a truth, but with an intent that you should take it for a lie; nor a lie, but with a design that you should take it for a truth; that those he speaks worst of behind their backs are in the surest way to preferment; and whenever he begins to praise you to others or to yourself, you are from that day forlorn. The worst mark you can receive is a promise, especially when it is confirmed with an oath; after which every wise man retires, and gives over all hopes."
No wonder he founded St Patrick's Hospital for the Insane.....
This is a great piece! However, we got Dublin Airport and a lot of the Motorways delivered, worth looking at what differentiates the few success stories from the obvious failures?
In my opinion Metro and issue over capacity on north Dublin rail should have been looked at together.
To get the crayons out. Continue metro north to Donabate to connect with Belfast rail line. Instead of 4 track build a tunnel parallel to metro and take belfast and Dundalk trains via airport into Connolly/ Spencer Dock via Glasnevin Junction and Royal Canal.
Bonus. You allow Trains serving heuston to connect to Dub Airport directly. Cork to Dublin Airport on one train has to be attractive alternative to car.
Yes different rail gauge (metro and heavy rail) and not cheap but two seperate tunnels with long term solution of providing long term infrastructure similiar to our European neighbours.

Another brilliant essay Sinéad. This analysis is hauntingly applicable to the UK too.
Begs questions about MetroLink !
